BURTON, MI -- Through the first two weeks of the high school football season, New Lothrop has sent a message to the rest of the Division 8 football teams in the state. Room for error against the Hornets? offense is virtually non-existent.
?When you play these guys and you miss a tackle, with their athleticism they just expose you,? Burton Bendle coach Jerry Todd said after his team was dealt a 47-21 home loss by the Hornets Thursday night. ?They?re well-coached, they?re disciplined and they don?t beat themselves. They have a lot of weapons and they do a lot of different things. They really stretch you and put you in positions where it?s tough to play good team defense.?
New Lothrop has outscored its opponents 96-35 in its first two games of the season. No one player is solely responsible, either.
Senior quarterback Austin Newman is in his second season in charge of the Hornets? option offense and has displayed great poise and playmaking ability. But he has a handful of weapons to work with -- which was on full display Thursday night.
Junior Amari Coleman touched the ball four times against Bendle. He finished with 142 yards and three touchdowns, running for scores of 44, 51 and 53 yards. Running back Josh Wendling ran for 69 yards with a touchdown and Michael Mucha tallied 120 all-purpose yards with a pair of touchdowns -- one on the ground and the other via a 54-yard hail Mary-style reception.

Newman himself was an efficient 6-for-8 passing with 108 yards and also broke a 50-yard run.
?It?s one of my favorite offenses to watch and obviously to play,? Newman said. ?We?ve got so many skilled guys, so many fast guys and you can do anything. The option is to keep pounding the ball and to keep running the ball and also play action over the top. You?ve just got so many skilled guys to work with.?
The Hornets don?t have a good offense, they have a great one. It?s an offense capable of keeping them in a game against any Division 8 team in the state and its versatility is its strength.
?It?s nice to have more than one weapon because it makes it tough for defenses to kind of key on one guy,? New Lothrop head coach Clint Galvas said. ?So we were able to do that and kind of keep the defense guessing on who is getting the ball. When you?ve got more than one playmaker, it?s nice. It makes coaching offense pretty easy.?
It sure looked easy Thursday night.
The Hornets had 33 points by halftime and were working with a running clock with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. And Bendle is no pushover.
The Tigers were 8-2 last season and entered this year with high expectations, many of which are still achievable. Yet, they were completely overmatched Thursday.
?They have had our number. We knew we would have to play four really good quarters of football to have a chance,? Todd said. ?We played about a quarter and a half and it got away from us in a hurry.?
With the Bendle game in the win column, the course has been set for New Lothrop to win a third straight GAC Blue title. The Hornets haven?t lost a regular season game in two years and weren?t defeated until the semifinals of the state playoffs last season.
?I think this win does wonders for the team. This is great,? Newman said. ?Coming in we knew about all the hype with this being the Game of the Week and just putting a statement like this, not only for the league but for the state, that we?re New Lothrop again was great.?
Nobody at New Lothrop is making any state championship predictions just yet, but at this point all options are on the table.
Just like when the Hornets? offense takes the field.
