Simplifying fitness and nutrition | Natalie Duhamel - Holistic Health ...

One evening this weekend I was walking the dog and I noticed two little boys ? maybe 10 or 12 years old ? playing in the park. They were playing a game that I remember playing when I was young. One boy would run between two landmarks, and the other boy would count how many seconds it took. Then they would switch places, the counting boy would run and the running boy would count. They ran between two trees, between the tree and a stop sign, between a stop sign and a lamp post. It was really cute and it was clear they were having a ton of fun.

What does this have to do with you? We adults tend to over-complicate this thing we refer to as exercise. And we really over-complicate this thing we call nutrition. So here?s a little guide to un-complicate things going forward.

Intervals: People stress about intervals ? how long the effort should be and how long the rest should be. We stress about what exercise is best performed while doing intervals. Heck, I?ve had people ask me at what PERCENTAGE of effort they should perform their intervals. Here?s my answer: unless you?re an Olympic-level athlete, just DO THEM and don?t sweat the small stuff. What exercise? Take your pick: running, squats, cycling (or spinning), pushups, whatever. How long? Go as hard as you can as long as you can. If you?re really going as hard as you can, it won?t last long. How much rest? Not too much.

Sports wear: The little boys in the park were wearing cotton shirts, shorts, one was wearing flip-flops and the other was wearing inexpensive-looking runners. They seemed to be doing fine exercising without specialized clothing and shoes. It?s true that wicking fabrics and seam-free stitching can make long bouts of exercise more comfortable. But for Pete?s sake please remember that in the 70?s everyone just exercised in cotton and wore flat shoes. So if you don?t have the ?appropriate gear?, don?t let that stop you from working out. Just put on something comfy and GO.

Nutrition: By far, I get asked what to eat before and after a workout more often than any other question. Let?s have a guess at what the boys in the park had to eat before and after their ?workout?. It was about 9pm when I saw them so I bet they had this thing called ?dinner? around 3-4 hours before exercise. They didn?t seem to be carrying anything in terms of gels, sports drink, or even water during their workout. When they got home, I suspect they either just went to bed without a post-workout recovery meal, or perhaps their mom let them have a fruit. So really people, unless you?re an elite athlete stop stressing about pre- and post-workout nutrition. This craze started in the body building industry but since most of my readers are not into body building, just eat when you?re hungry and don?t eat when you?re not. Eat lots of vegetables, some fruit, make sure you get protein and healthy fats with each meal. Skip snacks and desserts. Easy peasy.

Workouts: It?s time to take a hint from those boys I saw in the park and start seeing your workouts as play breaks. So many people see their workouts as a chore. Do you like chores? I don?t. It?s time to have some fun while you?re working out. Burpees? FUN! Squats? FUN! Mountain climbers? SO MUCH EFFING FUN. Choose your attitude.

What do you think? Are you over-complicating your fitness and nutrition? Can you use any of the tips above to just chillax about things from now on? Let me know in the comments below.

Authorities: TSA agents rescued kidnapped woman

TSA agents in Miami, Fla. say they rescued a woman, who they believe was kidnapped and allegedly beaten by two women, before she was forced onto a plane. WTVJ's Willard Shepard reports.

By Willard Shepard, NBCMiami.com

A woman who was beaten, kidnapped and brought to Miami International Airport by her assailants could have been forced to fly with them to New York, but two alert Transportation Security Administration agents noticed that something was wrong, authorities said.

In airport surveillance video obtained exclusively by NBC 6 South Florida, the victim is seen arriving at the terminal on July 5. She wore a scarf around her face to conceal the injuries sustained in an alleged beating, authorities said.

Two Miami Transportation Security Administration officers said they detected something was wrong with her.

Read the original story on NBCMiami.com.

??When she came closer I realized she was black and blue on both sides of her face, her forehead. I noticed her shoulder looked like she had a big rug burn,? said a TSA officer named Ray, who did not want to use his full name nor show his face on television for security reasons. ?Later on I found out from her that they had dragged her across the floor.?

She looked afraid, said another TSA officer, Danielle, who also did not want to be fully identified.

The fear came from a beating the woman took inside a fifth-floor room at the Best Western hotel in North Miami, police said. Detectives said the woman came to South Florida with a group on vacation -- but it turned to a nightmare when one woman accused the victim having an intimate relationship with her boyfriend. She was then beaten and kidnapped, North Miami Police said.

She was forced to go to the bank and withdraw funds, threatened, and taken to the airport for a flight back to New Jersey, police said.

That's when the two TSA officers, who are trained to detect suspicious behavior that could be an indicator of a terrorist attack, used those skills to save the woman as she was about to go through the security checkpoint.

"The way that she was acting, we actually thought it was a case of an abduction because she looked very young,? Danielle said.

Her partner approached her and asked her to come with them, Danielle added.

?She told us basically to help her and to take her away from the people that she was traveling with,? Danielle said.

Other officers then stepped in to detain four individuals, two women and two men.

Melissa Pineiro is charged with kidnapping, robbery, false imprisonment and battery, and Tori Beato is charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery and theft. They are pleading not guilty, have both bonded out of jail and will be back in Miami-Dade court Aug. 6, according to court records.

The two men were released.

?I believe we saved her life that day,? Ray said of the victim. ?According to her, she told us they threatened to kill her if she told anybody.?

The head of TSA security at MIA says that its program looking at someone?s behavior -- which when first installed caused some people to be concerned about their privacy -- assisted in bringing this woman to safety.

?In the course of their duty, they did what they were trained to do,? said Mark Hadfield, the agency?s director at MIA. ?They saw stress, they saw fear, and it turned out that this woman was in really dire danger.?

Police: Titans player dies in apparent suicide

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Hours after sending a gracious yet puzzling middle-of-the-night text message to a former college coach, police say Tennessee Titans receiver O.J. Murdock died in an apparent suicide.

Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said officers found Murdock about 8:30 a.m. inside his car with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock made a name for himself as a dynamic receiver and state champion sprinter in track and field.

Al McCray, assistant head coach/receivers at Fort Hays State, said when he woke up at his Kansas home on Monday he found a message on his cell phone from the player, thanking him for everything he had done for Murdock and his family. The athlete concluded the text with an apology that baffled McCray, who said he had known the 25-year-old since Murdock was in middle school.

"I spoke to him a week ago, and he was so excited about getting ready to go (to training camp). He was real happy about being able to help his mother out," McCray recalled. "You always like to hear kids who talk about that. It brings a smile to your face to hear a young man talk about 'Hey, I'm glad I'm able to help my mother out.'"

McCray was an assistant coach at Middleton when Murdock was there and later helped the player resume his college career after he was kicked off the team at South Carolina, where he was part of Steve Spurrier's first recruiting class.

"The hardest part about this is I got a text at 3:30 in the morning, where he said: 'Coach, I want to thank you for everything you've done for me and my family. It's greatly appreciated,'" McCray said. "At the end, he goes: 'I apologize.' And I don't know what he's talking about. I woke up, and I'm thinking he's apologizing because he texted me so early. ... I wish he had called instead."

Murdock, who signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and spent all of last season on injured reserve, was taken to Tampa General, where he died.

The speedy receiver did not report to training camp over the weekend because of what the Titans said at the time was a personal issue. He last was with the team in June for mini-camp.

"We were concerned initially when O.J. didn't report on the 27th. But we were able to make contact with him and he assured us everything was OK and he would be in here on Sunday. He didn't make it on Sunday," Titans general manager Ruston Webster said.

"He didn't give us a lot of information. He was injured and ... when he left here probably wasn't quite ready to go, so we were probably a little more relaxed on him than normal," Webster added. "If he had come in here, he probably wouldn't have been ready to practice right away."

McCray said when he last spoke to Murdock, the receiver didn't provide any indication that something might troubling him. Titans coach Mike Munchak said the team didn't detect any signs, either.

"We didn't have any (hints). It's a phone call you never want to get," Munchak said. "It's something that as a head coach, you never think you'll have to stand in front of your team and give them that kind of news. I think everyone was shocked by it. We weren't aware that there were any issues going on."

As a senior at Middleton in 2005, Murdock was rated the 10th-best wide receiver recruit in the nation by Rivals.com. He signed with South Carolina, but played in only four games, making one catch, after redshirting his first season. He was arrested for shoplifting at a Florida department store during that 2006 season and suspended.

"All of us here are saddened to hear of O.J.'s passing," Spurrier said. "Our condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends."

Murdock transferred to Pearl River Community College in Mississippi and then to Fort Hays State, where he helped he helped transform one of the nation's least productive Division II offenses into one of the more prolific. As a senior in 2010, he had 60 catches for 1,290 yards and 12 touchdowns.

That earned him an invitation to the NFL scouting combine. After going undrafted, he was signed by the Titans last summer but spent the entire 2011 season on injured reserve after hurting his right Achilles early in training camp.

Murdock had been out of football for two years when McCray talked him into doing the necessary academic work necessary to get back into school and, hopefully, rekindle his career.

"O.J. came here without a visit, without anything. After I got him eligible, he could have gone anywhere he wanted in terms of Division II. A bunch of the top-rated Division II programs were recruiting him, but he was a loyal kid," McCray said. "He comes here, we go from being ranked 150th in total offense to No. 8 in the nation. We averaged 33 points a game where the year prior we were only averaging 8."

Three former NFL players ? Junior Seau, Ray Easterling and Dave Duerson ? each died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds in the past year and a half. Easterling and Duerson were found to have brain damage at the time of their deaths and their families are among those suing the league over the long-term effects of concussions. Brain tissue from Seau has been released by his family for study.

Murdock's name had not come up in the ongoing concussion debate, and Munchak said he had no knowledge of the player having a history of such injuries.

"There was nothing that I'm aware of at all with that," Munchak said.

McCray said Murdock's polite, humble disposition and infectious smile made him a big hit at Hays State, which was stunned by Monday's news.

"Our homecoming game his senior year, the fire marshal calls our athletic director to say: 'Listen, we can't allow any more people to come into this game, we're at capacity,'" McCray said. "Our A.D. was like. 'No, you're not. Let 'em in.' That's just the impact that kid had here."

"It's hard, it really is because he was such a good kid. He was lazy in the classroom in high school, and of course he messed up at South Carolina, but you're talking about a kid who was on his mom's couch for two years. ... He got the grades he needed and he came up here and he had one dream, one goal: 'I'm going to come out here and I'm going to play at a high level and I'll get to the National Football League.' And the kid did it. He did it."

As most of my readers know by now I am an avid Canadian couponer. I love saving money and finding great deals as often as I can. The key to my success is being organized.? I find my coupons in various ways and try to cut them out and get them into my coupon binder as soon as possible. There is nothing worse than finding a sale discovering the coupon you need is sitting in the latest insert on your kitchen countertop.

This week I found a fantastic little product that will make any couponer very happy.

Introducing the Slice Safety Cutter by Slice Products.

slice cutter1 300x290 Slice Products Review & Giveaway ~ Canada Only 08/20cutter blade Slice Products Review & Giveaway ~ Canada Only 08/20

This safety cutter arrived at my house?earlier this?week and has been used every single day since it arrival. This little gadget is amazing. It is only about 2 -1/2?""long by 1-1/4?"?in height?and only about 2 mm thick. Don't let it's size fool you. This is a very well designed cutter that helps you get the job done.? It is fabulous to use for cutting out coupons especially the inserts. The Slice Safety Cutter contains a ceramic cutting blade which at first I could barely even see.? The blade is so tiny I really didn't believe it would work, but it does.? According the Slice Product website?the key is the ceramic blade that is made from high-tech Zirconium Oxide. It is harder than traditional metal blades and will never rust therefore will stay sharp longer. This Slice Safety Cutter is just that -SAFE. The blade is recessed and the way it is designed to be held in your hand makes it virtually?impossible to slip and accidentally?cut yourself. Another great feature is that unlike traditional scissors it is neither right or left hand specific. It works exactly the same no matter if you are a right or left-handed. You just simply hold it flat to the surface you want to cut and pull it back towards yourself. Each time you get a clean, precise?cut. There is very little pressure needed and I agree with Slice Products?that their design is very "finger friendly" As I mentioned earlier I have used my new Slice Safety Cutter every single day since I received?it.??I have used it to open frozen vegetable bags, seasoning pouches, chip bags and all sorts of different packaging this week. You could use to open CD/DVD packaging, cutting out newspaper articles, scrapbooking?and?so much more. It is a really useful tool to have around.?My?favourite use of course?is using it to clipping coupons. It takes a tedious?job and almost makes it fun.? I collected four?coupon inserts yesterday and my daughter sat down and?sliced out all the coupons in no time at all. I also like that it has a handy magnet inside and you can just stick it to the fridge when not in use. Alternatively, it also features a key ring hole so you can easily attach it to your keys and take it with you?anywhere you go. You can tell that a lot of time and effort went into the overall design of this piece and because of that it one of my favourite?new couponing tools.

Here is a little video of my daughter putting the Slice Safety Cutter to good use.

Surprise! Consumer Internet Companies Fuel Euro Growth VC Growth

download (1)Dow Jones VentureSource has released some figures about European venture capital which we should all take a look at and chew over. The headline news is something that you might not have predicted a few years ago. Given that bigger European tech companies have been largely drawn from the Enterpise/B2B space, it's significant that consumer Internet companies are now leading the charge. But the trends also show that European tech companies are suffering from too few exit opportunities which is leading to later-stage financing rounds and less deal activity.

YC-Backed NewsBlur Takes Feed Reading Back To Its Basics

logo_newsblurEvery few months or so, somebody will declare the death of RSS, and with it the death of old-school feed readers like Google Reader. Don't tell that to Samuel Clay, though, the founder of Newsblur, a web-based feed reader that's in Y Combinator's current batch of startups. Newsblur has many interesting features besides the pure feed reading experience, but at first glance, the web app feels like a throwback to the heady early days of feed readers a few years ago. In addition to the basic feed-reading experience, however, the service also lets you curate your favorite stories on Tumblr-like "Blur Blogs" which bring a strong social aspect to the service.

Is this what the iPhone 5 will look like? Supposed part leaks assembled!

Take some of leaked parts, supposedly for Apple's next generation iPhone 5, assemble them together, and what do you get? A supposed iPhone 5! This time it's iLab Factory that have done the deed, and what they're showing off does indeed look a lot like one of the 4-inch prototypes Apple was rumored to be considering for the iPhone 5.

Easily visible is the miniaturized Dock connector, as well as the bottom mounted headset jack. Also impossible to miss is the metallic plate that covers the back of the iPhone from antenna break to antenna break, leaving only the top and bottom clear, glass, and presumably radio-fiendly. The Home button, Sleep/Wake button, and volume controls all look the same, though the front mounted FaceTime camera has been centered.

The 4-inch, 16:9 display will be the big story, though. It's the first screen size change since the original iPhone debuted in 2007.

It's tough to tell the real from the fake from the really fake, but these parts do match increasingly frequent rumors surrounding the iPhone 5, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if it's fairly close.

One more photo below, and lots more via the source link below. Check them out and then let us know -- what do you think? Could this be what the iPhone 5 will look like come the fall? And if it is, what do you think of the design?

Leveraging Social Media Networks To Meet-up New Clients ...

Most social media is entirely virtual in nature, like the oft-mentioned Facebook and MySpace. These provide people the means to connect with each other on a virtual level, but do very little in the way of having people meet in the physical realm. (Of course, there?s always the chance that people on Facebook will choose to meet with each other of their own volition, but that?s something that?s arranged by the individuals on a personal level, and not something directly encouraged by way of the social media platform.)

With MeetUp, though, the game is entirely different. A MeetUp group is a way of social networking wherein physically meeting others in the group is the entire point of the website. There are literally hundreds of thousands of MeetUp groups in existence, and there?s absolutely no reason for one of them to not be directly connected to your business.

Having a MeetUp group is a great way to garner interest in your business, and since you have a physical place for your business to be, you have a physical place for your MeetUps to take place at.

There are many things that you could start a MeetUp group in honor of in terms of your business. If you have a car-based business, consider starting a MeetUp group to have people come to your business and discuss the history of a particular car that your dealership works with. Another great thing to focus MeetUps around is free (or paid) trainings ? if you have a dealership, for example, you could teach people how to change a tire, fix a flat, or change their oil.

Giving away information is a great way to get positive attention focused on your business. Even better, in order for the participants in the MeetUp to get the information, they have to physically come to your place of business for the class. And when they?re at your place of business for the class, there?s no reason to think that they won?t do any shopping while there, right?

If you are interested in utilizing MeetUp-type media ? which you should be ? there are other sites that do similar things. There?s actually a Twitter offshoot site called TweetUp that has become a very popular medium through which people meet each other locally and use the power of social media to further the good of themselves and their communities. Another site worth checking out is Biznik, which allows members to join it through an online platform, but it?s local-community based and is a tool for the promotion of in-person local events.

While going virtual is a great way to get the word of your business out there on the waves, don?t forget that going virtual is an excellent way to get people to come to your physical store, as well. Starting groups through MeetUp and similar sites is a great way to accomplish this goal.

How Obama 'beat' Romney to Israel ... with a White House signing ceremony

The Romney and Obama campaigns both say their guy is the better friend of Israel, which may explain the White House signing of a security cooperation act just before Romney visits.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / July 27, 2012

In what might be called a preemptive strike, President Obama chose to hold a White House ceremony signing into law the US-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act on Friday ? two days before Republican challenger Mitt Romney visits the Jewish state.

Governor Romney will sit down with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders on Sunday, as part of his efforts to juxtapose his own high regard for Israel with what he says has been Mr. Obama?s ?shabby treatment? of America?s closest Middle East ally.

Romney?s objective: to cut into the whopping 78 percent of the Jewish vote that Mr. Obama won in 2008, while firming up his own luke-warm support among some evangelical Christians who have questioned his passion for Israel.

But by highlighting his administration?s commitment to Israel?s security only hours before Romney arrives in Jerusalem, Obama is signaling that he plans to cede no ground when it comes to Israel and the debate over how his administration has treated it.

What the battle suggests is that, among foreign policy issues, Israel is an emotion-laden topic that both campaigns believe they can turn to their advantage ? and that means this week?s tit-for-tat over Israel is likely to be only the beginning.

Both Obama and Romney speak of America?s unshakable friendship with Israel: Obama claiming that no president has done more for Israel?s security than he has, Romney insisting the president has downgraded the two nations? close links, in particular by not visiting Israel once during his three-plus years in office.

But the one-upmanship over Israel has heated up recently among campaign surrogates ? in part because Romney, who on Wednesday commenced a seven-day international trip, committed to silencing his criticisms of the president while overseas.

After Vice President Joe Biden said this week that Obama ?has done more for Israel?s security than any president since Harry Truman,? former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton called Mr. Biden?s statement ?ridiculous? ? and offered his own superlative.

?This is the most hostile president since the state of Israel was created,? Ambassador Bolton said on Fox News.

The sparring over Israel ? and the administration?s record on it ? spilled over into a foreign policy ?discussion? the Brookings Institution held in Washington on Wednesday with representatives of the two campaigns.

Rich Williamson, a senior Romney foreign policy and defense adviser who served in the George W. Bush administration, skirted the evidence of Obama?s security commitment to Israel by zeroing in on what he called a lack of close ties, saying ?political cooperation has not existed.?

370. damage and desire (part four) | Lonetomato808's Blog

[PREFACE]

Another long post, but as a teaser to try to entice you to slog through the whole thing, I?m going to be answering this question near the end of it:

Given the vastly different social context we live in today (compared to that of the Bible), is sex before marriage still a sin?

No cheating and scrolling down to find the answer ? that would be less than loving and relational (because I work hard on these posts). 8)

[END PREFACE]

Last week, I put up a post where I talked about a hermeneutic of love, that is to say, a way of reading and interpreting the Bible that always looks for what the text is saying about love in relationship to God or neighbor. In that post, I talked about how reading through such a hermeneutic changes the way we understand what the Bible says about sexuality, such that the primary emphasis on the Bible in regards to sexuality is not about behavior (what?s right or wrong, permissible or impermissible), but about maintaining the proper place and purpose for sex (more on this later in the post).

There?s a reason I chose to use the example of sex in that post. It?s because I?ve been thinking a lot about sex lately.

Here?s why: I have one year left in grad school and for students like me in the Master of Divinity program, the last year is spent working on what they call the Integrative project.

The general topic I want to take on for my IP is developing a Christian sexual ethic that?s relevant for the church today. The topic is way too broad and I?ll need to pick a more focused area of research but in preparation, I?ve already started reading a bunch of books and watching a lot of online courses (I?ll post a brief list of what I?ve been reading/watching at the end of this post). And this is why I?ve been thinking so much about sex lately.

I ended the last post in this damage and desire series talking about pleasure as a potential way of bridging the sexual ethic of the Bible and the culture we find ourselves in today. However, after talking with some people (mostly offline) about it, I?ve come to see that pleasure (which should still remain a part of the conversation) is not an adequate basis on which to build a biblical sexual ethic.

Through these conversations, I came to see that appealing to an external, unmediated biblical ethic was unworkable (because of vast cultural differences between the world of the Bible and today), and appealing to an internal, person/pleasure-centered ethic of pleasure was problematic (because it can, among other things justify cheating on one?s partner).

But if we can?t look without or within for a workable ethic (sexual or otherwise) then where can we find it?

I want to suggest that the beginning point of any ethical exploration should be in relationships. And this brings me back to the relational hermeneutic I outlined in my post last week. I?ve come to believe that the primary thrust and message of the Bible is about love in relationship ? relationship with God and with neighbor. Now what happens when we try to build up an ethic from this idea of relationship?

There?s a common idea in Christianity that says, ?sin is what separates us from God.? This is based on a moral hermeneutic that reads the Bible as saying that God hates sin so much that God can?t be in the presence of sin; thus, when we sin, we find ourselves separated from God. This leads to a way of life where people do their best to minimize doing things (sins) that will divide them from God and that leads to people reading the Bible to find all the things they need to not do so that they can stay on God?s good side. Thus, they read the Bible with a hermeneutic of morals.

Now what happens when we think about the Bible as being about love in relationship? Well then the phrase about sin and God gets flipped around so that ?anything that separates us from God is sin.?

At first, that might seem like a distinction without a difference, but take a look at this passage in Mark 2:23-38. Here, we find a story where Jesus and his disciples are walking through a field, picking grain off of the stalks, and eating. They?re doing this during the Sabbath and some religious teachers challenge Jesus on this because it?s supposed to be forbidden to do work during the Sabbath and picking grain is considered work.

Now let?s put this in some historical context. The idea of keeping the Sabbath goes all the way back to the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). Basically, that commandment says, don?t do any work on the seventh day because it?s a holy day. For teachers of the Law, the question then becomes, ?well, what?s considered work?? They were reading with a moral hermeneutic: God doesn?t want them to do work on the Sabbath so they need to figure out what kinds of actions are work so they can not do those things. That led them to create a huge list of actions Jews could and couldn?t do on the Sabbath. Picking grain (even if it was to feed your hungry self) was considered work and that?s why the Pharisees got all twisted up in a bunch when they saw Jesus and his disciples feeding themselves.

Jesus, on the other hand, seems to read the Sabbath commandment with a hermeneutic of love in relationship. Read this way, the point of the Sabbath wasn?t about the not working bit, it was about rest and remembrance bit ? because a loving and relational God doesn?t want people working themselves to death. Living life according to some arbitrary set of behavioral rules is missing the point entirely because the Bible (and the commandments) aren?t about rules, they?re about relationship. That?s why Jesus can say in verse 27, ?The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.? That?s what Jesus meant when he says, ?I have not come to abolish [the Laws] but to fulfill them,? (Matthew 5:17). It?s also why Paul says that ?the letter [of the Law] kills, but the Spirit gives life,? (2 Corinthians 3:6).

Okay, but what does all of this have to do with sex and sexuality?

Well in the first two of this damage and desire series, I wrote about how the ultra conservative churches I attended when I was younger taught that we should fear any and all sexual desire outside of marriage. One of the key passages they used to justify and instill this fear was Matthew 5:27-30 which has the line, ?anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.? Read with a moral hermeneutic, you end up with a ministry that teaches people to go to any lengths necessary to avoid any kind of sexual arousal.

But again, I think that?s missing the point, because here?s the thing. If a man thinks that God wants him to avoid any and all sexual arousal, that can easily lead to a fear of women which can then lead to a (conscious or unconscious) hatred of women. At the very least, it leads to really awkward interactions between men and women.

Read through a relational hermeneutic, I think we begin to see the point that Jesus was actually trying to make. Looking at a woman lustfully is equal to the sin of adultery because they both have the same end result: the rupture of relationship. Adultery breaks relationship because you?re sleeping with another person?s spouse. Lust breaks relationship because it objectifies (rather than humanizes) the person being lusted over.

All of this (finally) gets us back to the question I posed in the preface of this post: Given the vastly different social context we live in today (compared to that of the Bible), is sex before marriage still a sin?

And the answer is?

The answer is irrelevant.

And it?s irrelevant because again, I?m arguing that the Bible is not a book about rules, it?s a book about relationships.

So the question, ?is sex before marriage still a sin?? is missing the point. The question that should be asked is, ?what is the purpose of sex in relation to? well, relationships??

Now here we have to do some extrapolation, because as I explained in a previous post, the Bible never talks about the world of dating that we live in today. Almost all of the passages talking about sex in the Bible are directed at married couples (because in that society, people got married in their early teens and nearly everyone was married) and almost all of those passages basically say, ?don?t sleep around.?

To me, that suggests that the Bible is saying two core things related to sex:

  1. the purpose of sex is to heighten and deepen intimacy between two people and
  2. people who are having sex should stay committed to one another.

Add those two things together and we find the helpful guideline (not rule): according to the Bible, there is no such thing as casual sex.

So then, the reason why I want to say that it?s irrelevant (missing the point) to come down on one side or the other on the sex-outside-of-marriage question is because the point about sex isn?t about when or with whom, it?s about intimacy and commitment.

Now here?s where things get tricky for unmarried couples and their sexuality.

Because I?m arguing for a relational reading of the Bible, I want to suggest that couples need to decide between themselves how they want to explore (or not) their sexuality before they are married.

But the relationship between two partners is not the only relationship at play.

Ideally, the couple should be a part of a church community that can give them the tools with which to make this decision. More importantly, the church should be a place that continues to accept the couple regardless of what decision they end up making. And perhaps most important of all, the church should be a place of unconditional love and acceptance in the case of couples who decide they had wanted to wait for marriage before having sex, but ended up having sex anyway. And I think a case can be made for the idea that a church that embraces a more relational (rather than behavioral) ethic will have an easier time creating a safe, loving space for such a couple.

I?ll end with this story which helps to illustrate this last point.

Many, many years ago, I knew this one couple. They were great together. They were both heavily involved in ministry, their goals and their callings both lined up well, and they were crazy in love ? everyone knew they were headed towards marriage. And then late one night, they had sex. And then within a matter of days, their relationship was over. Just like that.

Now I didn?t know this couple super well so I don?t know the details of their split, but I can well imagine what went down. For one thing, they were riddled with guilt. For another thing, word got out. Fast. Again, I didn?t know this couple very well and I wasn?t seeking out the information, but somehow word got out on the grapevine and made its way to me. It seemed like everyone involved in this ministry was talking about it (albeit, in hushed, coded terms ? winks, nods, and other stupid, subtle gestures). Intentionally or not, they were shamed. They were told by leadership that they needed to take a break from their relationship (for their own good and for the good of the ministry organization they were a part of). They split up and never got back together again.

I think that?s a really stupid and sad outcome.

Who knows what amazing things this couple could have done together. They were on track to getting married, why should the fact that they had sex derail their life together? If the Bible is indeed about love and relationship then the fact that the way this ministry handled this situation led to the couple breaking up and ostracized them from community (breaking relationship on multiple levels) is far more sinful than anything the couple did.

Sad and stupid. I?m sure that incident led to years of feelings of guilt and shame, longing and regret.

And the one thing they probably stopped feeling (from others, from themselves, and from the way they understood God)?

Love.

Best Buy: Customers returned Samsung tablets because they thought they were getting iPads

Here come some more juicy tidbits from recently unsealed documents tied to the upcoming Apple (AAPL) vs. Samsung (005930)?extravaganza! From rejected settlement offers to muscle flexing on both sides, things are starting to heat up in San Jose, California. In the latest round of documents examined by All Things D, a few new items of interest have been uncovered. Whether or not Samsung?s Android devices are really Apple ?copycats? is often debated in court and on tech blogs, but some newly uncovered internal Samsung documents suggest that Samsung may have its work cut out for it while trying defend its designs.

Samsung was forced by the court to furnish a number of internal documents, and similarities between Samsung?s Android devices and Apple?s wares are apparently often a topic of discussion. The papers include records of several Samsung employees discussing the similarities themselves. According to one document, Samsung even had a number of reports from Best Buy stating that customers were returning Samsung?s Galaxy tablets because when they bought them, they thought they were getting iPads.

The South Korea-based consumer electronics giant is currently doing its best to prevent these damning documents from being used in the trial, for obvious reasons. If they are permitted as evidence, however, it could certainly spell trouble for Samsung.

MassPrivateI: How universities are spying on students.

By Bennett Stein:

On Sunday, the New York Times published an extensive piece surveying the ways American universities are using their access to students? information to tailor their college experiences. Universities collect a huge amount of data on their students?course selection and grades, past educational experience and standardized test scores, and other personal information. Austin Peay University analyzes a student?s data and suggests classes in which the student is likely to ?succeed.? Arizona State University uses its data to identify students who are ?off track? based on course selection and course results. ASU is also experimenting with using information on student swipes of ID cards around campus?at the gym, at the dining hall, at the dorm, at the library, etc.?to understand social ties. (Last week, my colleague Catherine Crump also wrote about universities experimenting with monitoring students? internet usage to assess mental health.)

While universities have an important role in supporting students towards graduation, these data mining methods threaten campus as a place of self-exploration, development, and discovery. A student who knows that a computer is analyzing his course selection and grades may be less likely to choose a course out of the ordinary or take a risk on an assignment for fear of being deemed ?off track.?

During my first year of college at the University of Michigan, I took two Spanish classes, a bible lecture, a philosophy seminar, a course on political advertising, and a survey course on arts and culture in public life that was taught by a professor who primarily studied 20th Century avant-garde Mexican film. Like my academics, my social life was diverse and often disparate as I met kids unlike me and the people I knew growing up. While these courses may not have contributed directly to my eventual degree in public policy this past May nor to my current position with the ACLU?and those freshman year dorm buddies ended up being weirdos?the lessons and experiences from the decisions and mistakes I made as a fresh-out-of-high-school 18 year old still prove invaluable.

This blog has frequently described the chilling effects of similar data analysis programs on free speech and social interactions. These effects are particularly relevant on college campuses where malleable young people work towards critical decisions about lifestyle, world view, and career. Students must not feel restrained by the potential judgment of a computer program as they develop themselves as adults and community members. Pressuring students to fit into an algorithm threatens the intellectual and social vibrancy of the campus (and of society, as my colleague Jay Stanley discussed last week). Even if a student does not expect her behavior to be flagged for further scrutiny, we have seen time and again that these complex computer algorithms make mistakes that have very real consequences.

I am sure that I would have questioned my course selection had I thought it might be flagged as wrong. I might have opted out of second (or third) dinner at the dining hall had I expected my ID swipe would lead to someone noticing my eating habits. Instead, I grew a lot and learned a lot in college because I made choices that my academic advisors, my professors, maybe my mother?and even a computer program!?may have considered off track.

http://www.aclu.org/blog/technology-and-liberty-lgbt-rights-religion-belief-reproductive-freedom/big-data-nsa-facebook

Big data on campus.

Universities see such technology as one answer to a big challenge. On average, only 31 percent of students at public colleges get their bachelor?s degree within four years, and 56 percent graduate within six years. Such statistics have come under greater scrutiny as parents and politicians demand accountability from colleges. Tennessee, for example, doles out higher education dollars in part by measuring how effective an institution is at graduating students.

With 72,000 students, A.S.U. is both the country?s largest public university and a hotbed of data-driven experiments. One core effort is a degree-monitoring system that keeps tabs on how students are doing in their majors. Stray off-course and a student may have to switch fields.?

And while not exactly matchmaking, Arizona State takes an interest in students? social lives, too. Its Facebook app mines profiles to suggest friends. One classmate shares eight things in common with Ms. Allisone, who ?likes? education, photography and tattoos. Researchers are even trying to figure out social ties based on anonymized data culled from swipes of ID cards around the Tempe campus.

This is college life, quantified.?

Data mining hinges on one reality about life on the Web: what you do there leaves behind a trail of digital breadcrumbs. Companies scoop those up to tailor services, like the matchmaking of eHarmony or the book recommendations of Amazon. Now colleges, eager to get students out the door more efficiently, are awakening to the opportunities of so-called Big Data.?

The new breed of software can predict how well students will do before they even set foot in the classroom. It recommends courses, Netflix-style, based on students? academic records.?

?If the university could model, at a high level, the social network of the college, that would be a very useful data layer,? says Matt Pittinsky, who co-founded Blackboard, a company that provides a platform for online classes, and later became an assistant research professor in the sociology program at Arizona State. A university might reach out to a student ?who is not showing evidence of social integration,? Mr. Pittinsky says, pointing out extracurricular activities and communities that might tie them more deeply to the institution.?

Working with computer scientists, Mr. Pittinsky started an academic research project that tiptoes toward a better understanding of social connections. The research team?s raw material: anonymous logs from swipes made with Arizona State ID cards. When students use these cards, be it to buy food on campus or access the fitness center, the transaction gets recorded. The question that struck Mr. Pittinsky was whether or not you could infer social ties from those trails.?

The prospect of card-swipe surveillance discomforts Mr. Zimmer. He worries authorities might misuse location data to do things like track foreign students or instigators of a student protest.?

But the broader issue of privacy hangs over even less Orwellian efforts to collect and monitor personal data. In his own courses, Michael Zimmer, assistant professor in the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin includes a disclaimer on his syllabus disclosing what he can see through Milwaukee?s online-learning platform, including ?the dates and times individual students access the system, what pages a student has viewed, the duration of visits, and the IP address of the computer used to access the course Web site.?

Interior Design: Helping You Find Your Harmony | ej-fransen.com

You come home, you?re stressed with your job, you?re stressed with the cat, and you?re pretty much stressed about everything right now because it?s been one of those days. The last thing you want to come home to is a sink full of dishes and a disorganised living space. Don?t even look at ?that? table you hate. A lot of people might not realise it, but your living space is extremely important to the functionality of the rest of your life.

Take?Horizon Media ? New York?as an example; they?ve been voted No. 5 in the World?s best office interiors. They wanted a new office space to bring their staff together and increase interaction; so they had the vision and took the leap. With their improved working space, they were a lot happier in their roles and you whilst your workplace may not be so invested, you can transform your living space.

Think Feng Shui ? It was originally used to orient buildings, but seeing as you can?t change how your house has been built now, you can completely focus on turning the inside into your own personal haven.

Where do you start?

If you want to tackle your whole house, then so be it. But don?t stress yourself too much by taking too much on at a time. A good first step is starting with whichever room is your living room or perhaps even a family room:

  • Where to start? Start with the room you spend most time in.

So you?ve got your first task, deciding on a place to start is often stressful. A lot of people decorating or changing their homes often ask whether I think it?s beneficial enough to bring in a professional to decorate your home. This brings me to my next step:

  • Will you complete this by yourself/with a partner or will you need outside help?

Be honest with yourself: If you make a start on this alone, will you see it through to the end? Your inner harmony isn?t going to be settled by a room or task half finished; it will just end in frustration.

It?s important to know what it will cost. Do not stress yourself if you cannot afford the wallpaper you want; research a cheaper alternative. Do not of course mistake this with compromising on your vision, but in the real world, you need to keep within confines of a budget so you can ensure you finish your room.

  • Colour schemes and lay outs

You need to have a vision, and hopefully your budget has put this in perspective for you. Choosing a colour scheme should only come after you have decided on the room and looked at your budget. After all you probably wouldn?t decorate your bathroom in the same colours as your bedroom. Don?t change colour choices half way through or you may end up with a confused scheme at the end.

How do you carry on?

You?ve hit a brick wall, maybe not a literal one; the vision you started with deserted you last night and you?re back to unsettled and unhappy in your home.

  • Get back on track ? remember why you were completing this in the first place

Remember the night you came home and decided you needed a change? Remember that the wall colour was driving you to tears? Focus is your number one goal during the re-invention; focus on the reasons for the change and persevere with the project. Maybe now is the time to call in the help or the cavalry.

  • Is it time for professional help?

Have you lost your vision? Is it time to bring in those art consultants or the Feng Shui guys who do this for a living? Again, be honest with yourself; you?re not failing by needing help, and you can?t sit your guests in the Kitchen for the rest of your life.

  • Add your finishing touches

No one can force you to finish your project, but by staying focused and being methodical you should now be arriving at putting in your finishing touches. Whether you got in the art consultancy to help or not, you can put in your own personal touches now in the form of furniture or art work. This may be the time you want to get in an interior designer to help you look for the best pieces. Make your hard work sing louder by stamping your mark on the room

You?ve finished after days, weeks or maybe months of hard work. Harmonious living areas will help your general well-being, and why not? The time we don?t spend at work we spend at home, so comfort and happiness is important in your surroundings. Just try not to change your mind when you watch the home improvement programs and decide you prefer that lilac to the natural?colors?you?ve spent 3 months working on.

KITH Board Announces Upcoming Retirement of Executive Director ...

KITH Executive Director, Jan Dickerman, will be retiring in September. The KITH Board of Directors acknowledges?Jan?s contributions to the agency since she joined as Executive Director in March 2008.? ?KITH has made significant gains during Jan?s tenure,? Ron Olsen, KITH?s Board President stated.

Utilizing her extensive experience and connections in the housing and human services field, Jan has developed an effective Case Management Program and strengthened KITH?s Housing Programs?. Jan piloted KITH?s new Welcome Home family rent subsidy and case management program in 2010. The program continues in 2012 with funding from Opus Community Foundation, Redwood Community Church, the Wahle Family Foundation and other funders.? Jan fortified KITH?s volunteer program, working with United Way and 501 Commons on a Volunteer Improvement Program Grant in 2011 and hiring KITH?s first paid Volunteer Coordinator in 2012.

Jan has been very busy and effective stewarding KITH?s assets. After having an assessment made of KITH?s properties, Jan managed the process of securing needed exterior renovations to KITH?s Salisbury Court property. She?s also gained community support to upgrade heating, plumbing and cabinetry in Salisbury Court apartments, with help from countless volunteers, businesses and community organizations. During her tenure, KITH retired the debt on Petter Court II in 2011, and has strengthened the agency?s financial position, increasing funding while lowering costs during this tough economic climate. Under Jan?s leadership KITH has also started two new programs for socially conscious investors, ?Lease on Life,? in which investors purchase a condo and lease it to KITH who manages the property, and ?Lending Hope,? in which investors loan funds for purchase of condos for KITH to own and use to house homeless families on the eastside.

Jan expressed great confidence in ?a very strong staff and effective staff team,? and in KITH?s Board of Directors to build on the agency?s current stability and to accomplish the strategic directions which the Board has set for the agency, including the focus to serve more homeless families. KITH?s Board Search Committee has retained a consulting firm and is in the process of screening and interviewing candidates for KITH?s next Executive Director. ?The Board is grateful that Jan is leaving the agency in a strong position for future growth,? Olsen said.

5 Basic Steps for Retirement Planning

I?ve find it remarkable that we have to plan our retirement decades ahead of time. With so much information about women, money, and investing, where should you even start? I decided I would think through the experiences I?ve had with women and investing. And three different women stood out to me because their concerns and questions were innocent, and, yet, they were eager to learn.

  1. A woman in her mid-thirties who felt investing was like gambling.
  2. A young lady in her twenties who felt she didn?t need to think about retirement, yet.
  3. A woman who asks ?what?s a brokerage account??

QUESTION: What would you say to each of these women?

Here?s what I said to each one:

1. ?It?s natural to feel that way. Most people are like you, fearful of losing money more than they are hopeful of making money. Investing is not gambling. Investing is using your money in the allotted time you have to accumulate something.?

2. ?When do you anticipate retiring??

She responded, ?I don?t know. 60??

I continued on to say, ?Great. Where will you get the money??

She said, ?Social Security.?

I replied, ?No, full benefits are not until 67, under current law. You have to have enough money accumulated by the time your reach 60 in order to retire. Retirement is on your shoulders. No one else.?

3. An additional account that could help you increase your discretionary income and reduce your income taxes in retirement.

My preliminary goal is to change their perspective or at least shift their mindset. The most important thing when planning for retirement is your perception of it and your mindset.

It is never too late to set up an automatic monthly contribution toward your retirement. Unless you are thinking of retiring in five years and don?t have a dime for it. Then, drastic measures may need to take place?re-strategize.

To make sure you will be prepared for your retirement, you want to keep it simple. Succeeding with your retirement plan will require a long-term approach. The steps I?m going to outline I call it your back-up plan. Plenty of women have aspirations of owning their own business and becoming extremely, financially successful that the steps I?m going to outline will seem elementary. But they are your foundation. Your vision of retirement will be different then the woman sitting next to you.

1. What do you want your retirement to look like?

If you are like me decades away from retirement, you might not have the entire
answer. Even as a personal finance expert, I do not know exactly what I want my retirement to look like. What I do know is I want financial freedom in my retirement to continue to do the things that I love to do. I do not want to be struggling financially and become another statistic of a woman retiring in poverty who is outliving her money. I know my lifestyle will be more than what it is today. I plan on living a ?rich? life. I do know I will need to have funds for possible medical expenses.

Jot down on a piece of paper what you envision retirement to be like for you. You can always add on to it.

2. Know your Asset Allocation Mix

When you don?t have a strategy in place, investing can seem like a gamble?uncertainties and the unknown feed into our own perception of fear. To help mitigate, a great start would be to consider an appropriate asset allocation mix. Taking the long-term approach to investing with the appropriate asset allocation mix (and don?t forget about rebalancing) is a way to minimize your risk. Determining your asset allocation mix?among stocks, bonds, and cash?is a personal situation. Basically you trying to pick an appropriate mix of assets to meet your goal at a level of risk you are comfortable with. Always keep this in mind: if you have more than 10 years to invest, you allocated a higher percentage?80 percent or more?to stocks. If you have 10 years or less until you need to withdraw you money, make sure you take a more conservative approach.

Here are a couple of tools to help you get started:

  • ING has a tool on their site to help you start thinking about retirement. It?s called ING Find Your Number.
  • Try using this Asset Allocation Calculator to help you create a balanced retirement portfolio. My asset allocation mix according to the calculator is:

32% Large cap
23% Mid cap

17% Small cap
14% Foreign Stock
5% Bonds
10% Cash

Truthfully, I have nothing in cash. I have an aggressive risk tolerance with my investment approach. And that?s because I understand I have time to make up any decrease in my portfolio. Also, I?m aware that a certain amount of volatility is important to grow my investments.

Investment tip: The core of your portfolio should be invested in low cost index funds and/or exchange-traded funds. They have low expenses?less than .5% expense ratio?because they are not actively managed.

3. 15% allocated for retirement

Set up a minimum amount of money you will contribute every month toward your retirement. The key is consistency. The goal is, at least, to reach 15 percent of your income toward your retirement. Ideally, you would like to reach 20% or more.

I don?t want to scare you. Start with baby steps. Begin with 5 percent of your income and gradually increase by one percent every 3 months until you reach your threshold. You can always increase the amount as you receive raises, bonus, and promotions.

4. Periodically Rebalance Your Portfolio.

Rebalancing is extremely important because it will help you maintain your target asset allocation. By periodically rebalancing, no more than once a year, you can reduce the tendency of what?s called ?portfolio drift.? Potentially, you can reduce your exposure to risk relative to your target asset allocation. In other words, you can sleep better at night!

5. Participate in a/Open a Retirement Account

The easiest way to set a retirement account is by participating in your employer-sponsored plan, such as a 401(k) or 403(b). If one is not provided or you would like to make sure you have multiple sources of income, open a IRA: Roth or Traditional. I prefer a Roth IRA because of it?s tax-free withdrawals.

If you are a businesswomen, please make sure you establish your own retirement account, such as a SEP IRA. The contributions you make are tax deductible.

It?s always a smart move to have multiple accounts set up for retirement. Basically, each type of retirement account or investment account is taxed differently. Therefore, you may end up paying less in taxes. Setting up a brokerage account (taxable account) means that at retirement you will be taxed based on a long-term capital gains tax; instead of taxed at your ordinary income like in a 401(k), SEP IRA, Traditional IRA, Spousal IRA, etc.

Quick breakdown on the tax withdrawals at retirement:

401(k), SEP IRA, Traditional IRA, etc (tax-deferred): withdrawals are taxed based on your ordinary income

Roth IRA, Life Insurance Policies (tax-deferred): Tax free withdrawal.

Brokerage Account (taxable account): withdrawal are based on long-term capital gains tax.

The key things to remember about retirement planning are getting started, remaining consistent with monthly contributions, and keeping the core of your portfolio in low cost index funds.

?

What other steps are you doing to make sure you have a well funded retirement?

Lack Of Security Killing Off Business Enterprise In Jamaica ...

THE Jamaican economy has been one of the worst performing economies in the world over the last 30 years judged by its dismal rate of economic growth. In addition, we are now one of the most indebted countries in the world with a debt/GDP ratio of over 140 per cent.

Diagnoses have differed widely and include a gamut of explanations, empirical and psychological. They include: structural features, poor management by successive governments, corruption, institutional weaknesses, ill-conceived macroeconomic policies, excessive taxation, inefficient private sector, exploitation by foreign multinational corporations, the dismantling of preferential trade arrangements, deleterious effect of the global economic crisis, and political rhetoric. We may have missed a few more, but the essential point is that none of these fully explain the problem.

In our view, the fundamental cause of Jamaica?s economic problems is the fact that we have not had and still do not have in place the necessary foundation for a private sector-led, market-driven economy. These foundational prerequisites include physical security, security of productive property and security of earnings.

The stark reality of Jamaica is that citizens, in general ? but business persons, in particular ? are not physically safe. The insecurity involving serious injury and loss of life is increased significantly once a person operates a business of any size in any part of the country. Business persons are not safe at home or at their business place or in moving from one place to another. Business people are prime targets for criminals and the fear of loss of life or endangering family and loved ones discourages countless people from investing, operating a business and from returning home to Jamaica to do business.

The Jamaican economy is being murdered one business person at a time every day.

Even if someone is prepared to risk his or her life to go into business, very often they cannot because they are unable to get the use of their assets, in particular buildings and lands that have been captured. In many cases, there is no security of productive property which seriously discourages investment and prevents rightful owners from putting their assets into production.

The loss of construction and other investment to squatting and other forms of illegal possession is incalculable. The amount of idle land or under-utilised land in the agriculture sector is enormous. It is almost impossible, even with a court order, to regain possession of captured land for fear of violence and the interference of politicians.

If someone risks injury and death and has use of the property, there is no guarantee that they will reap the rewards of their endeavours. Praedial larceny is responsible in large part for sub-optimal production and insufficient private investment in agriculture. If a return is realised the business person may be deprived by extortion of protection money or simply robbed. No one farm or business is too small to be immune from robbery.

The fact that the mango tree is on your land does not mean that you will get any of the fruit. It is first come first served. Ownership and cultivation are irrelevant.

No economy can grow and prosper if business people are not physically secure, if their productive property is not secure, and if their earnings are not secure.
