No. 2 Miami knocked off by Wake Forest, 80-65

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) ? C.J. Harris scored 23 points and Wake Forest beat No. 2 Miami 80-65 on Saturday to snap the Hurricanes' 14-game winning streak.

Codi Miler-McIntyre added 15 points while Harris was 5 for 5 from 3-point range to lead the Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9 Atlantic Coast Conference).

They shot 54 percent, led by double figures for the entire second half and reeled off 12 straight points to pull away for their biggest victory under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

Durand Scott had all 17 of his points in the second half for the Hurricanes (22-4, 13-1), the last of the schools in the six BCS conferences to get its first league loss.

Shane Larkin added 13 points, Trey McKinney Jones had 11 and Kenny Kadji finished with 10, but Miami was outrebounded 36-35 by the younger, smaller Demon Deacons.

Still, the Hurricanes clawed back into the game with an 18-8 run that started late in the first half and ended on Scott's jumper with 14 ? minutes left that made it 46-41.

He added a layup 2 minutes later to pull Miami to 50-45, and it looked as if the Hurricanes were going to find a way to keep their charmed run rolling.

But two possessions later, Harris turned a turnover into a fast-break dunk that started a 12-0 run that put the Demon Deacons on the fast track to their biggest victory since they knocked off then-No. 1 Duke four years ago when they were in the top five themselves.

As the final seconds ticked away, Harris and Travis McKie ? two of the three available non-freshmen on scholarship ? exchanged a flying chest-bump before the Wake Forest students rushed the court for the second time in little over a month.

After that last run, Miami didn't get closer than 11 while Wake Forest pulled away late to bring a surprisingly lopsided end to the best start to ACC play since the 1998-99 Duke team went 16-0 in the league.

McKie finished with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Demon Deacons, who ? after two years of being one of the ACC's worst teams ? have transformed themselves into a tough out in home conference games.

They improved to 5-2 against ACC foes at Joel Coliseum. The losses ? to Duke and Georgia Tech ? are by a combined six points.

They thoroughly outplayed the Hurricanes from start to finish, hitting shots from all over the court against a Miami team that was perhaps fatigued after gutting out its last three wins by a combined 12 points.

Harris hit three 3-pointers during a 2-minute stretch of a 28-8 run that put Wake Forest up 19 on the Hurricanes ? who hadn't trailed by more than 13 in any ACC game.

Arnaud William Adala Moto's fast-break layup with just over a minute before the break put the Demon Deacons up 42-23.

ARCHOS New Platinum Line of Android Tablets Take Aim at Apple?s Retina Display (Price & Specs)

Great news for Archos fans. The company is further expanding its line of tablet computing solutions. We reviewed the formidable but slightly flawed Archos Gen X10 running Android. The company took all the cool ideas from that device and slapped them in the recently announced Titanium line of impending Archos tablets. But what?s this?yet another new line of tablets!? What so ever could be the difference? Well this new Platinum line will be the first tablets on the Android platform to feature true HD IPS display types that combine with the beefy performance of a Quad-Core CPU.

There are 3-new tablets in the Platinum line. Each features a distinguished aluminum design. At the bottom tier is the Archos 80 Platinum, an 8-inch slab that kicks out a 1024 x 768 resolution across its IPS screen. This device boasts speeds that are twice as fast as the popular Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Further trumping the Kindle, the 80 Platinum has double the RAM and a rear-facing camera, for only a $199 and it?s available later this month.

In the middle lane we have the Archos 97 Platinum HD. For $299 this tablet does an amazing 2048 x 1536 over its 9.7-inch IPS screen. Think iPad Retina display and? you have a good idea of how crisp the resolution should be. However you can forget about the pricing Apple has for that iPad version. The 97 Platinum is also available this month for $299.

Pulling up the rear is the higher-end Archos 116 Platinum. This one uses a wider 11.6-inch ISP screen, capable of 1080p display resolution, making the Archos 116 Platinum a very unique device in the tablet landscape. It will retail for $349 when it launches in April, later this year.

The entire Platinum line will each share the following specifications and features.

  • High-Definition IPS display with capacitive multi-touch screen?
  • QUAD core CPU at 1.2 GHz with 8-core GPU, with 1080p video decoding
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean?
  • Full access to the 700,000 applications?
  • Archos Media Center applications
  • Front and Back Cameras
  • Mini-HDMI and Micro SD ports

Hillary Clinton Fake Panda Sex Video Has Conservative Group 'Freaking Out'

Mother Jones:

The story revealing that FreedomWorks produced a video with an obscene scene featuring a giant panda, Hillary Clinton, and oral sex created quite a stir and, according to former officials of the influential tea party group, had staffers at the conservative advocacy group and super-PAC "freaking out," as one put it.

Obama, first lady out on Valentine's dinner date

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Flowers? Check. A gift? Check. President Barack Obama said he had both and was ready for a Valentine's Day date with the first lady.

Speaking in suburban Atlanta on Thursday, Obama said his wife, Michelle, made him promise to get back to the White House in time for their date.

He did, of course, several hours before they left the White House together for the short ride to chef Jose Andres' restaurant Minibar.

Obama had joked earlier that getting flowers is easier with a Rose Garden right outside the door.

Except the garden was devoid of colorful roses, or flowers of any kind, on Thursday.

The White House Rose Garden, located just outside the Oval Office, was started in 1913 when first lady Ellen Wilson began planting roses there.

On Having a Valentine Marriage | Lifetime Ministries

Part 2 of 2, by Bill and Anabel Gillham; edited by Roxane Day

When we begin looking into the soul?mind, will, and emotions?man and woman are different. The husband is loath to surrender and resists attempts to be drawn into vulnerable positions. The woman strives for interdependence, and she keeps evaluating the marriage relationship for closeness, needing each other, deep communication, and careful consideration of how these two lives?once lived in single-centeredness can now be formed into one life. (That doesn?t spell independence, and it?s as incomprehensible as speaking a foreign language to a lot of males.)

Emotionally, a husband needs to feel that his wife is proud of him; he needs his wife?s praise. He may not deserve that praise; he may not perform ?praiseworthy? feats, but that?s the rule: Praise your husband. He needs your praise. That will make him feel good.

She, on the other hand, needs to feel loved?Tender, Loving Care.

TENDER communicates gentleness. A tender touch, definitely, but a husband?s eyes can communicate hostility or frustration and I think all wives would agree that a man?s voice sometimes sounds gruff even when that?s not his intent.

LOVING means he?s making an effort to understand her thoughts and her behavior. It also means recognizing her ability to do certain things and encouraging her to do them, being interested in her activities. It means recognizing that she?s uncomfortable in doing certain things and not expecting her to do them. It also means remembering special days and being a part of difficult days with a phone call, an invitation to lunch, etc.

CARE communicates respect. It means treating your wife as a person worthy of dignity and honor. It means that others, especially family and children, see you watching over your wife that way. Care also provides security and protection?the kind of protection a person would give to a precious gem. If a husband does those things, his wife will feel special and secure.

In the mind area, a man needs to believe that he is the leader in the relationship. That?s certainly not to say that he has all of the characteristics of a marvelous leader.

?It?s a need that I have, and when Anabel follows my leading, it gives me a sense of importance in our relationship; it helps me believe I?m needed, that she can?t get along as well without me as with me. I need to believe I?m necessary. This enhances my sense of self-worth in our relationship.

Editor?s note: Here?s a little exchange between Bill and Anabel regarding their individual needs in the marriage relationship.

?As a wife I can understand this because I have similar needs. I need a sense of competency, of self-worth, of importance in our relationship. I need to believe I?m needed, and I?ll have all those needs met if you will just listen to me.?

?You?ll get all of that if I listen to you? On a one to ten scale, put a number on how important my listening is.?

?Why, it?s a ten.?

?Man, I don?t understand how a wife gets that much mileage out of her husband?s listening ear! And I believe most men are as clueless as I am about what makes a woman tick. Men?s eyes meet and they shrug. But guys, we?ve got to humble ourselves, trusting Christ to live through us to listen to our wives if we?re ever going to learn how to make marriage work. The irony is that they can read us like the morning paper! But, by listening to our wives, we can learn how to love them like Jesus loves His wife, the Church. That word love means far more than ?warm fuzzies.? Women spell love L-I-S-T-E-N!?

Now in the physical area, a husband needs a sexual relationship with his wife, and a wife enjoys this as well, but there are times when she doesn?t want that at all. She just wants to be held. Our husband?s embrace makes us feel secure. If every time a wife snuggles or sits close to her hubby or if every time he holds her, he guides her toward the bedroom, she gets the impression that he?s not sensitive to her needs; he?s interested in satisfying his needs. Women frequently say, ?The only time my husband pays attention to me is when he wants sex.?

The three male needs: praise, authority, and a sexual relationship all have to do with male status, with seeing himself as powerful and retaining control as the goal. The needs of the woman, on the other hand, deal with intimacy in the relationship, communicating, sharing, becoming one. Women are people-centered, relationship-centered, heart-centered creatures. That?s the way it is from the very beginning?little boys play competitive games, calling attention to their strengths; little girls walk around holding hands and talking, forming relationships. We?re still doing the same thing as adults.

Marriage can be more bliss than bother when we turn that relationship over to Christ and confess, ?I can?t be all that I need to be?I?ve finally seen that. Lord, You can create something beautiful out of our marriage. I ask You to do that, and Lord, use me. I?d like to have a Valentine marriage in July and November and all the other months, too. Thanks, dear Father.?

Senate panel to vote Tuesday on Hagel nomination

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate Democrats are pushing ahead with a vote Tuesday on Chuck Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary, rejecting Republican demands for more financial information from Hagel in a politically charged fight over President Barack Obama's second-term national security team.

In a brief statement, Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said the panel would meet Tuesday afternoon with the "intention to vote on the nomination after the members have an opportunity for discussion." Levin had hoped to hold a committee vote last Thursday, but postponed it amid growing complaints from Republicans.

Levin's opposition to Republican calls for more of Hagel's personal finances and his intent to hold a vote got a strong endorsement from the panel's former top Republican ? Sen. John McCain.

The Arizona lawmaker said in a statement on Monday that Hagel had fulfilled the panel's rigorous requirements on information and a vote should occur. McCain said he still had concerns about Hagel's national security positions and declined to say how he would vote.

"I believe it is appropriate for the Armed Services Committee to vote on Senator Hagel's nomination and determine whether to move this nomination to the Senate floor where members can debate and express their own judgments on Senator Hagel," said McCain, who also rejected any GOP protest of the vote.

"I will not participate in any walkout of tomorrow's committee vote ? an action that would be disrespectful to Chairman Levin and at odds with the best traditions of the Senate Armed Services Committee," McCain said.

Obama tapped Hagel, 66, a former two-term Nebraska Republican senator and twice-wounded combat veteran in Vietnam, to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is stepping down after serving as CIA director and Pentagon chief in the president's first term.

Democrats hold a 14-12 edge on the Armed Services panel and it's likely that Hagel will win approval on a party-line vote just hours before Obama delivers his State of the Union address at the Capitol.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the full Senate could vote either Wednesday or Thursday on the nomination, before lawmakers take a weeklong break. He dismissed talk of a filibuster

"There's never in the history of the country ever been a filibuster on a defense secretary, and I'm confident there won't be on this one," Reid said at the start of the Senate session.

The committee is deeply divided over the nominee, with Democrats backing the president's choice and Republicans pressing for more information about Hagel's finances and foreign donors to organizations that he has been affiliated with since leaving the Senate in 2009. Two Republicans on the committee ? Sens. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina ? have threatened to use their power to stop the nomination.

"I would threaten to cause a 60-vote margin; yes I would. If it took a filibuster, I'd do it that way," Inhofe, the top Republican on the committee, told "Fox News" on Sunday. Graham signaled that he would hold up Senate confirmation of Hagel and CIA Director-designate John Brennan if he doesn't get more answers about the fatal assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, last month.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Sept. 11 attack.

"We're going to get to the bottom of Benghazi," Graham said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

All 55 Democrats are expected to back Hagel and two Republicans ? Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi and Mike Johanns of Nebraska ? have said they will vote for the nominee. At least four Republicans have said they would oppose a filibuster of the nomination of the president's Cabinet pick, ensuring that the Hagel nomination has at least 60 votes to move forward.

In a letter on Friday, Levin had rejected Republican demands for financial information as beyond the scope for nominees, Republican and Democrat, as has been required for nearly 30 years of nominees.

"The committee cannot have two different sets of financial disclosure standards for nominees, one for Sen. Hagel and one for other nominees," the Michigan Democrat wrote.

His letter was in response to a letter from 26 Senate Republicans to Hagel insisting that they needed more information before they could vote on his nomination. Among those signing the GOP letter were Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Inhofe.

Republicans have asked Hagel to disclose all compensation of more than $5,000 from the past five years ? three years more than the law or committee rules require. Levin said the panel's two-year requirement on disclosure is consistent with the Ethics in Government Act as well as past practices for all nominees for Senate-confirmed positions and candidates for federal office.

Specifically, the Republican senators want Hagel to disclose whether any of the eight organizations and businesses he was affiliated with after leaving the Senate received money from foreign sources.

But Hagel has already told the committee that neither he nor his wife has received during the last 10 years any compensation from, or been involved in any business transactions with, a foreign government or an entity controlled by a foreign government, Levin wrote.

Gen X: Are you ready to be the sandwich filling?

Generation XHey Gen Xers ? you may not want to hear this, but guess what? You?re (we?re) getting older! For some of us, that?s not a huge surprise: we?ve been socking money away into our 401Ks, using the 529 college savings plans for our children, have a reasonable mortgage on a reasonable house and a bit of a savings cushion.

Sound like you? Me, neither. Our generation has the largest debt load, was hit worse than other generations in the housing crisis (we were coming of age to buy when the market was at its peak), and have seen our job growth slow to a dead stop because the economy is keeping more Boomers in the job force than they had hoped. According to some sources, we?re 15 years behind where our parents were at our age, and we may not be able to catch up.

Here?s another thing that we need to get ready for: being the new ?Sandwich Generation.? Many of us started our own families a little later than our own parents, and so we have young children. Our parents are Boomers and the group that is slightly older than Boomers, and they?re really aging ? another fact you may not want to face.? I know I didn?t, when suddenly my husband and I had to.

Last fall, my father-in-law, Bill, fell off his back porch. He and my mother-in-law, Donna, live about 150 miles from us in western Wisconsin. They are both in their 70s and retired, although Donna works part time as a school lunch lady. They like to travel, and drive to Minneapolis to visit us and to southern Iowa to visit other family members whenever possible. Bill has had some medical issues over the past decade, including diabetes and receiving a pacemaker.

Unfortunately, Bill was home alone when he fell. He broke several ribs, punctured his lung and scraped up his leg pretty badly. Fortunately, he was able to reach his cell phone to call an ambulance. Following the fall, Bill was in and out of the hospital and a nursing home for a couple of months, dealing with complications from a skin graft.

Meanwhile, my husband and I were sitting at home, feeling a little helpless and completely unsure of what to do next. We had so many questions ? was their home safe enough for the two of them? If not, how could we help them do repairs and upkeep when we ourselves are still in a paycheck-to-paycheck situation, paying off student loans as well as childcare, dance and swimming lessons? If Bill couldn?t go home, where would he go? And how would Bill and Donna pay for it? Did Bill and Donna have a plan? And ? the biggest question of all ? how do we talk to them about all of this?

Lucky for us, I am a volunteer board member of DARTS, a Dakota-county nonprofit organization that ?connects people to services and partnerships that improve their quality of life, help them age well, and enable them to engage in their community.? I knew where to go with my questions, and in turn learned of a great resource that I feel is important to share with others who may be as unprepared as my husband and I were: the Eldercare Partners network.

The Eldercare Partners network is a collaboration between DARTS and two other Twin Cities-based nonprofit organizations, Senior Community Services and Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, that helps caregivers by preparing them to assume to the day-to-day challenges of managing and attending to the basic needs of older adults. Eldercare Partners provides assessments, education, resources, and professional services to help caregivers deal with their new role and understand how best to help their care recipients.

Chances are, you?re going to be in a similar situation someday: in Minnesota, family and friends provide 92% of senior long-term care. Eldercare Partners is a great resource for people ? yes, including Gen Xers ? who suddenly, inevitably, have to face being sandwich filling.

After all of our worrying, my father-in-law is on the mend, back at home, and already taking short trips out of town. Although we didn?t need Eldercare Partners this time, I?m happy to know about this incredible resource that I can tap into, to help us navigate through our inevitable future as caregivers.

Shirley, Visions of Reality: Berlin Review - The Hollywood Reporter

"Shirley, Visions of Reality"

The Bottom Line

An impressive cinematic recreation of images and moods for Hopper cognoscenti, it more controversially puts the American realist's work in a social, political and cultural context.

Venue:

Berlin Film Festival (Forum)

Cast:

Stephanie Cumming, Christoph Bach

Director/screenwriter:

Gustav Deutsch

Iconic American painter Edward Hopper is such a household god that oil-on-canvas reproductions of his work are sold online; why not, then, attempt to bring his art to life through the magic of cinema? In Shirley, Visions of Reality, Austrian filmmaker, architect and experimental artist Gustav Deutsch scores a remarkable success in reproducing 13 of Hopper?s most famous oil paintings on film, setting off his own meticulous production design with the brilliant lighting by cinematographer Jerzy Palacz.

More controversially, he connects the paintings through the fictitious story of a red-haired New York actress who leads the viewer through America?s wars and social history from 1931-63. The highly political dimension Deutsch adds to Hopper?s work risks enraging some and boring others. Yet if one allows the filmmaker the artistic license to experiment with a unique interdisciplinary art project, and to weave his own story around another artist?s ambience, Shirley opens up these 20th century American scenes to alternate interpretations. In any case, this feature-length film composed of nearly static tableaux vivants is earmarked for art museums, many of whose patrons are likely to find it beguiling.?

We first meet Shirley (Canadian-born dancer and choreographer Stephanie Cumming) aboard a train reading a book of Emily Dickinson?s poems. The painting it re-creates is Hopper?s 1965 ?Chair Car? and it introduces several motifs that Deutsch favors throughout the film: incredible colors, strong diagonals, bright lighting, huge empty windows promising a larger world outside the confines of one?s own life. The next scene is ?Hotel Room? set in Paris in 1931, where our heroine contemplates her return to New York after a European holiday. Though the set ably captures the cramped atmosphere of the painting, in this case it is a less slavish imitation. The space is rationalized somewhat by shifting the window to another wall, and so on.

Deutsch?s careful analysis of Hopper?s approach to his subjects contributes to the illusion of seeing a movie-size painting as much as the lighting and set design. Often, for instance, the fixed camera has a very voyeuristic feel in observing the girl in her underwear, much like the p.o.v. of a film audience. Not surprisingly (also given that Shirley is supposed to be a professional actress who has worked with groups like the Living Theater) a number of works refer directly to theater and the movies, like ?New York Movie? in which we find Shirley ?playing the role? (her words) of the bored blonde usherette. In ?Intermission? she watches a romantic French movie. ?Hotel Lobby? has her reading a Thornton Wilder play in New Haven being directed by Elia Kazan, in which she is to play the part of a maid. In a later tableau, she will be devastated by the news that Kazan has turned in Communist friends to the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

It?s a stretch to set Hopper?s dreamlike images, frozen between past and present, in a precise historical context, yet each is preceded by a radio newscaster reading the headlines. So pass the Depression, Mussolini and Hitler, the Cold War, Korea, JFK and Martin Luther King, all the way to Vietnam. Though Shirley herself remains timeless and unaging, her earnest interest in the social, political and cultural issues of the day reminds us she is a reflective New York intellectual riding the crest of avant-garde thought, however outdated some of her ideas may seem today. ?The curious time warp she lives in creates a strange sense of tension in the quiet film.

Looking like a mysterious cross between Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain, Cumming uses her very expressive body and eyes to create the mood of each painting. As her silent boyfriend Steve, and later her boss in ?Office at Night,? German thesp Christoph Bach is a ghostly presence without a line of dialogue.

Working seamlessly with the lighting and sets are the precisely colored backdrops of walls and floors by scenic artist Hanna Schimek and the sensuous costumes of Julia Cepp.

Virtual vehicle vibrations: Predicting role of posture in traffic collision injuries

Feb. 11, 2013 ? "Sit up straight in your chair!"

That command given by countless parents to their children may one day be delivered by vehicle designers to a robot that is actually a computerized model of a long-distance truck driver or other heavy equipment operator, thanks to a University of Iowa research program.

That's because a UI researcher has designed a computer program that allows engineers to accurately predict the role posture plays in transferring the stress of vehicle motion to bone and muscle in the head and neck.

Titled "Human head-neck models in whole-body vibration: Effect of posture," the paper is published in the online Jan. 3 issue of the Journal of Biomechanics.

Lead author Salam Rahmatalla, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and research engineer at the Virtual Soldier Research (VSR) Program, a part of the College of Engineering's Center for Computer-Aided Design (CCAD), says that a computer model is needed.

"Studies have shown that awkward head-neck postures inside whole-body vibration environments can increase discomfort and the risk of injury," he says. "The goal of this project is to introduce a computerized human model that can be used to predict human motion in response to whole-body vibration when the human takes different head-neck postures."

He notes that the predicted motion data of his current model can be used to drive more sophisticated computer human models -- with muscles and internal tissues -- that can predict muscle forces and internal strain and stress between tissues and vertebrae.

Significantly, the computer program may reduce the need for actual human subjects to drive test vehicles.

"One major benefit of the current computer human model is the possibility of using it instead of humans in the design/modification loop of equipment in whole-body vibration," he says.

Rahmatalla says a wide variety of industry, university, and other researcher venues likely will learn from his work.

"The automotive industry, and manufacturers of heavy machinery including construction, agriculture, mining, and military vehicles can benefit from the application of this model to the design of their equipment," he says. "Also, human factors researchers and ergonomists can use this model to investigate the effect of head-neck posture on human response, performance, human machine interaction, and injury risk in whole-body vibration."

Rahmatalla's long-term VSR objective is to develop a virtual human capable of reproducing complex human responses to a whole body vibration environment that will help answer questions related to potential injury risks and design modifications.

Rahmatalla conducted the study by having 11 male participants sit in a vehicle simulator where they were subjected to white-noise random vibration and the acceleration data of the head and neck for each was recorded. The recorded motion data was used to calibrate the computer human model.

His colleague in the study was Yang Wang, a student in the UI Graduate College and CCAD graduate research assistant.

Older Tweets Now Showing In Twitter Search

Twitter LogoTwitter announced they are now displaying older tweets, when relevant, in their search results.

Twitter said that the older tweets that show up in the search results represents a "fairly small percentage of total Tweets ever sent." They use engagement metrics such as "favorites, retweets and clicks" in their algorithms "to determine which Tweets to show."

For example, I searched for [space shuttle] in Twitter and this tweet from a while back showed up at top:

Is it relevant? That is the big challenge Twitter needs to solve.

Frugal Family Tree: Red Shoes! YES! Hotter Shoes Review and ...

As everyone knows by now I have a love affair with shoes! Its my one thing that I do not bat an eye to spend money on and indulge in. Its a functional habit after all since we all need shoes for our feet!

I have a shoe must have list and a pair of comfy red shoes is on it. Sure I can buy some cheap heels and have red shoes but part of looking good is feeling good too. If you have on shoes that are not comfortable you can see it on a woman's face and how she walks. A woman that is rocking a pair of red shoes that are comfy is just awesome!

Being on my feet all day at work and chasing a toddler around on my days off I knew I needed some flat red shoes that I could feel cute in and run, jump and play in. I found a great UK company, Hotter that offers cute and comfy shoes for every occasion. I love being able to have online shopping connect me with companies I might not have found if not for the net. Hotter has many styles for heels, wedges, sandals, boot, flats and even a Men's line. Plus they even carry cute shoes in wide widths!

Since Red Shoes are on my shoe must list I selected the Lulu shoe in Chili Red. I LOVE the fit of this shoe. It runs true to size and is so comfy it feels like your not wearing any shoes at all! The red is a nice pop of color to any outfit. The design I liked for?being?comfy?with the top strap and the side having a design cut out for air venting. I can wear these even without socks into the summer on days I do not feel like wearing a sandal. They are cute,?feminine?and sooo?comfortable? I love that they were?comfortable?from day 1, no wearing them in or anything. The toe box is spacious allowing for perfect?comfort. I wore these to work and my co-workers loved them. I am on my feet all day so comfort is a must.

A few other styles I liked are:

LL Cool J celebrates Grammy-hosting gig at dinner

(AP) ? LL Cool J spent the night before the Grammy Awards sipping Hennessy with some of his famous friends.

The 45-year-old rapper-actor and returning Grammy host was the guest of honor Saturday at a private dinner sponsored by the liquor brand. Celebrities such as Mark Cuban, Michael Bolton, Neil Patrick Harris, Mark Burnett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Gene Simmons were among those who raised a glass when LL Cool J proposed a toast to "success in every form."

"All kinds of wealth. Not just money, but the wealth of wisdom, the wealth of happiness, the wealth of joy, the wealth of love. That's why we're here," he said at the intimate gathering at the Bazaar by Jose Andres at the SLS Hotel, where the menu featured cocktails frozen with liquid nitrogen and 14 different dishes. "We want to have a good time, we want to enjoy ourselves, and we want to have some fun tomorrow as we celebrate music."

LL Cool J is set to host the 55th annual Grammy Awards Sunday at Staples Center. He'll also perform on the show, debuting a song from his forthcoming album, "Authentic," due in May. He'll be joined on stage by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, DJ Z-Trip and Chuck D of Public Enemy, who also appear on the album.

The album, his first in five years, is taking him in new directions musically.

"It doesn't sound like I'm playing catch-up with what's going on now. It doesn't sound like I'm trying to do whatever it is that one would think hip-hop is doing now. It's just me being LL," he said. "I made an LL Cool J album. There's no limits. The governor's off. I'm going to experiment. I'm going to work with different people ? people you would expect, people you wouldn't expect ? and just do some great stuff, hopefully."

He released his first album, "Radio," in 1985 when he was still a teenager, never envisioning a path that would take him to the Grammy stage.

"When my first records came out, they weren't even eligible for a Grammy. That's how far the Grammys have come," he said. "The first decade of my career, or maybe even more, rap wasn't really seriously a contender in the Grammys. At a certain point we got a category, but that was just kind of up in the air, it wasn't televised, etc. So this is amazing for me."

Grammys pay tribute to Shankar, King, Temptations

(AP) ? Ravi Shankar passed away in December before he could attend The Recording Academy's Special Merit Awards celebration where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award. But the 91-year-old sitar master, Indian music promoter and friend to The Beatles got the call a few days before he passed away, and that meant everything to his family.

"I was very excited to hear about the lifetime achievement award a week before my dad passed away, one day before he went into surgery," Shankar's daughter, Norah Jones, said in an email to the Associated Press a few hours before the ceremony. "He knew about it and was very happy, and also that he and my sister, Anoushka, were both nominated in the same category for a Grammy (this year) was a special thing as well. We all miss him and are very proud of him. I will forever be discovering and re-discovering his music from all walks of his long and amazing life."

Jones and Anoushka Shankar's acceptance of their father's award Saturday afternoon at the Wilshire Ebert Theatre in Los Angeles was one of many memorable moments in the ceremony honoring performers and non-performers alike.

The crowd made a happy birthday video for Carole King, saluted husband-and-wife songwriters Marilyn and Alan Bergman on their 55th anniversary, and swooned as Charlie Haden paid tribute to his wife and family.

Shankar, singer-songwriter King and jazz bassist Haden were honored with lifetime achievement awards along with classical pianist Glenn Gould, who made his final public performance in the same theatre, blues guitarist Lightnin' Hopkins, The Temptations and pop singer Patti Page, who like Shankar passed away in the last two months.

Special merit awards also were handed out to non-performers. Chess Records founders Philip and Leonard Chess, husband-and-wife songwriters Marilyn and Alan Bergman, and former Capitol Records executive Alan Livingston won the Trustees Award given to non-performers. And MIDI developers Ikutaro Kakehashi and Dave Smith and ribbon microphone manufacturer Royer Labs won technical Grammys.

Haden noted the importance of his family in his acceptance speech.

"I thank my brother Jim for letting me listen to his jazz records," Haden said. "I heard Charlie Parker and that changed my life forever."

For King, it was James Taylor who sent her down a new path. She noted in her video message he forced her to get up and sing one of her own songs in concert when she really didn't see herself as a performer: "I guess he was right."

The Bergmans, who wrote "The Way We Were," turned in a romantic acceptance speech, adding another special moment to a partnership that produced some of our most well-known songs.

"I just want to say this in public: I'm married to the most remarkable woman in the world," Alan Bergman said.

"Oh, cut it out," Marilyn Berman responded.

Tunisian government pushes supports to rally

In response to hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters angered by the assassination of a prominent opposition leader, the ruling party in Tunisia called on supports to stage their own pro-government demonstration.

Thousands of Tunisians are gathered at el Jallez cemetery to attend the funerals of slain opposition leader Chokri Belaid, near Tunis, Friday. The ruling Ennahda party called on supporters to gather in central Tunis Saturday afternoon to show support for the constitutional assembly.

The ruling Ennahda party called supporters to gather in central Tunis Saturday afternoon to show support for the constitutional assembly whose work on a new constitution suffered a severe setback when leftist parties withdrew their participation following the killing Feb. 6 of Chokri Belaid.

Ennahda said the demonstration would also protest "French interference" after comments earlier in the week by French Foreign Minister Manuel Valls, who denounced the killing as an attack on "the values of?Tunisia's?Jasmine revolution."

Tunis' main thoroughfare Avenue Bourguiba was bustling on Saturday morning, with full cafes and shops reopened after a general strike a day earlier. Police in riot armor and plainclothes officers patrolled but gone were the tear gas and running street battles of a day before.

Friday's events added to the growing turmoil in?Tunisia, where the transition from dictatorship to democracy has been shaken by religious divides, political wrangling and economic struggles. It's been a perilous stretch for a country many hoped would be a model for other post-revolutionary Arab states.

Belaid, who in his car outside his home, was shot dead while by an unknown assailant. Hours after his killing Wednesday, Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali said he would form a new, technocratic government to guide the country to elections ? but Ennahda, his own party, rejected that idea soon afterward.

Late Friday, Jebali renewed his proposal for a new government, which would be a key concession to the country's opposition. "I am convinced this is the best solution for the current situation in?Tunisia," Jebali said, offering to resign if the elected assembly did not accept his proposed cabinet.

Although Jebali said he was confident he could get Ennahda's support, his party's earlier rejection of the proposal exposed its own divisions between moderates and hardliners, and it remained unclear how the prime minister planned to pull enough support to his side.

Tunisians overthrew their long-ruling dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011, kicking off the Arab Spring revolutions. In the two years since, a moderate Islamist party, Ennahda, won elections and has governed in a coalition with two secular parties.

But the coalition's failure to stem the country's economic crisis and stop the often-violent rise of hardline Salafi Muslims have drawn fierce criticism, especially from staunch secularists such as Belaid. He had also accused Ennahda of backing some of the political violence through its own goon squads.

Memorial SloanKettering puts Watson to use to aid cancer treatment decisions

We heard almost a year ago that Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center had turned to IBM's Watson as a tool to help doctors provide the best cancer treatment recommendations, and it looks like those plans are now starting to be put into practice. IBM, along with WellPoint, Inc. and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, have today announced what they describe as the "first commercially developed Watson-based cognitive computing breakthroughs." More specifically, they've developed a system that allows Waston to draw on a wealth of medical information and quickly provide evidence-based treatment recommendations to doctors.

And we do mean a wealth of information; as IBM explains, Watson has spent the last year digesting more than 600,000 pieces of medical evidence and two million pages of text from 42 medical journals, and it has the ability to parse some 1.5 million patient records covering decades of cancer treatment history. That all takes the form of two separate "Watson-based" products to start with, one of which IBM expects to be used by more 1,600 providers by the end of this year. You can find more details on those at the source links, and get a more general overview of the project in the video after the break from IBM.

Syrian rebels fight close to heart of Damascus

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled President Bashar al-Assad's forces on the edge of central Damascus on Wednesday, opposition activists said, seeking to break through to the heart of the capital.

Their offensive aims to break a stalemate in the city of 2 million people, where artillery and air strikes have prevented rebels entrenched to the east from advancing despite their capture of army fortifications, the activists said.

"We have moved the battle to Jobar," said Captain Islam Alloush of the rebel Islam Brigade. The district links rebel strongholds in the suburbs with the central Abbasid Square.

"The heaviest fighting is taking place in Jobar because it is the key to the heart of Damascus," he said.

Assad, battling to crush a 22-month-old uprising in which 60,000 people have died, has lost control of large parts of the country but his forces, backed by air power, have so far kept rebels on the fringes of the capital.

Despite the setbacks, Assad has remained defiant, telling a visiting senior Iranian official on Sunday that Syria was able to confront "current threats ... and aggression".

That visit came just after Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi met Syrian opposition leader Moaz Alkhatib in Moscow. Iran is Syria's strongest backer in the region.

Salehi said on Wednesday the Syrian government may be ready to respond positively to Alkhatib's offer of direct peace talks.

"I think that the Syrian government is ready to negotiate with the opposition," he told Egyptian state news agency MENA during a visit to Cairo.

But Alkhatib gave the Syrian government until Sunday to release all women detainees, otherwise he would regard his offer of dialogue as rejected by Assad.

"If any woman stays in prison, I consider the regime not responding," BBC Arabic quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile Syrian state media denied rebel gains in Jobar and said the army had pushed back rebels from the neighborhood and other parts of the Ghouta area of eastern Damascus.

"Our noble army is continuing its operations against the terrorists in Irbeen, Zamalka and Harasta and Sbeineh, destroying the criminal lairs," Syrian television said.

But video footage taken by activists purported to show opposition fighters inside Jobar after they overran an army road block, and rebels said they had made significant gains.

"Parts of the Damascus ring road fell to us today. The road has been effectively the last remaining barrier between the Ghouta and the city," said Abu Ghazi, a rebel commander based in the eastern suburb of Irbeen.

"I don't want to give people false hopes but I think if street fighting reaches central Damascus, the regime will not be able to quell it this time."

A disorganized rebel advance on the city failed last year. Ghazi said that this time opposition fighters had established supply lines to support their offensive.

"STRATEGIC TARGETS"

The Damascus Media Office, an opposition activists' monitoring group, said 13 people had been killed in fighting in Jobar, while three people had died in army shelling on Thalatheen, a rebellious neighborhood in southern Damascus.

The Syrian National Council, an exile opposition group dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, said Syrian Free Army rebel units were attacking "strategic targets" in Damascus.

"There is a new strategy, brigades are united. What is happening in the field is huge but it is a preparation for bigger operations," said Abu Moaz al-Agha, a leader of the Gathering of Ansar al-Islam, which groups many Islamist units.

"Right now we will attack checkpoints especially in Jobar that some time ago seemed impossible to get near to. We want to shake the regime."

Abbasid Square and the Fares al-Khoury thoroughfare were closed as fighters attacked roadblocks and fortifications with rocket-propelled grenades and mortars, activists said.

"The areas of Jobar, Zamalka, al-Zablatani and parts of Qaboun and the ring road have become a battleground," activist Fida Mohammad said from Qaboun.

Residents reported explosions across the east and north of the capital. "The army seems to have been caught by surprise," one activist said. "Reports from the heart of the battle are talking about several tanks being hit and the army has been pushed to Abbasid Square."

The rebel Liwa al-Islam unit said the operation to enter eastern parts of Damascus aimed to relieve pressure on two large southwestern suburbs that have been under army siege.

Assad's core forces, mostly from his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, are based in Qasioun Mountain, which is part of Damascus, and on hilltops dotted with artillery pieces and multiple rocket launchers.

SUPPLY LINE

Estimated at 70,000 army, security and militia personnel, the core forces have a supply line to the coast that has remained open despite rebel efforts to disrupt it.

Rebels were also attacking Adra, 17 km (10 miles) northeast of Damascus. Video footage purported to show an armored vehicle in the area being hit by a rocket. Thousands of refugees have fled to the town, which is home to Syria's largest prison.

In Palmyra, 220 km (140 miles) northeast of Damascus, on the main road to the oil-producing east, a suicide car bomb struck a military intelligence compound, causing dozens of casualties, opposition campaigners said.

A bomb destroyed part of the back wall of the compound near the Roman-era ruins in the city and then a suicide car bomber drove through, detonating the vehicle and destroying parts of the facility, activists in Palmyra said.

They said it was not immediately clear how many people had been killed in the blast and the clashes that followed. Video footage, which could not be immediately verified, showed a large cloud of thick smoke rising in the city.

"The first car bomb struck at around six in the morning. The second one, which caused the larger explosion, broke through into the compound 10 minutes later," activist Abu al-Hassan said from the city.

He said tanks in the compound had responded by shelling an adjacent neighborhood, killing several civilians.

Roadblocks across the city also came under attack.

The state news agency said two "suicide terrorists" blew up cars packed with explosives near a garage in a residential district, killing and wounding several people.

Street demonstrations against Assad's rule erupted in Palmyra at the beginning of the revolt almost two years ago. But the army has since tightened its control of the city, which is situated near a major oil pipeline junction.

Disney's earnings dip, still top analyst forecasts

(AP) ? Disney won over more fans on Wall Street with its latest quarterly performance, despite a slight drop in its earnings.

The downturn announced Tuesday was less pronounced than the modest dip analysts anticipated as Walt Disney Co. digested higher programming costs at its ESPN television network and dealt with a less appealing line-up of theatrical and home video releases in its movie studio. The company offset some of those problems with an advertising upturn at its ABC network and higher spending at its theme parks.

It was good enough to set the stage for Disney's stock to hit a new high in Wednesday's trading. The shares gained 96 cents, or nearly 2 percent, cents to $55.25 in Tuesday's extended trading after the release of the financial results. If the stock reaches that level Wednesday, it would top its previous peak of $54.87, which the shares touched just last week.

Disney earned $1.38 billion, or 77 cents per share, during its fiscal first quarter, a three-month stretch that ended Dec. 29. That compared with net income of $1.46 billion, or 80 cents per share, in the same period in 2011.

Excluding certain charges and one-time gains, Disney said it would have earned 79 cents per share. On that basis, the results exceeded the average estimate of 76 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Revenue climbed 5 percent from the previous year to $11.3 billion ? about $130 million above analyst predictions.

Authorities storm Alabama bunker, rescue boy

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? Law enforcement officers stormed an underground bunker Monday in southeastern Alabama, freeing a 5-year-old boy and shooting his captor to death after they became convinced the child was in imminent danger, officials said.

Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, of Midland City had taken the child off a school bus after fatally shooting the driver on Jan 29. He had remained holed up in the bunker with the child ever since, communicating with authorities through a ventilation pipe into the shelter.

Dykes had been seen with a gun, and officers concluded the boy was in imminent danger after nearly a week of negotiations, said Steve Richardson of the FBI's office in Mobile.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said late Monday that Dykes was armed when officers entered the bunker to rescue the child. He said the boy was threatened but declined to elaborate.

"That's why we went inside ? to save the child," he said.

Olson and others declined to say how Dykes died. But an official in Midland City, citing information from law enforcement, said police had shot Dykes.

The official requested anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

Dykes was known by neighbors for his anti-government rants and for patrolling his property with a gun, ready to shoot trespassers. He had stayed for several days in the tiny bunker on his property before.

"He always said he'd never be taken alive. I knew he'd never come out of there," said an acquaintance, Roger Arnold.

Monday evening, officers were sweeping the property to make sure Dykes had not set up any bombs that could detonate. Full details of the bunker raid had not yet emerged. However, neighbors described hearing what sounded like gunshots around the time officials said they entered the shelter.

At a late Monday news conference, authorities declined to comment on how they had observed Dykes or on how he died, citing the pending investigation.

Asked about the official's statement that Dykes had been killed by law enforcement officers, FBI spokesman Jason Pack said in an email early Tuesday: "The facts surrounding the incident will be established by a shooting review team from Washington, DC in the coming days."

The boy has been reunited with his mother and appears to be OK, authorities said.

Richardson said he had been to the hospital to see the boy and he was laughing, joking, eating and "doing the things you'd expect a normal 5- or 6-year-old to do."

Michael Senn, pastor of a church near where reporters had been camped out since the standoff began, said he was relieved the child had been taken to safety. However, he also recalled the bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., who has been hailed as a hero for protecting nearly two dozen other children on the bus before being shot by Dykes.

"As we rejoice tonight for (the boy) and his family, we still have a great emptiness in our community because a great man was lost in this whole ordeal," Senn said.

The rescue capped a long drama that drew national attention to this town of 2,400 people nestled amid peanut farms and cotton fields that has long relied on a strong Christian faith, a policy of "love thy neighbor" and the power of group prayer. The child's plight prompted nightly candlelight vigils. Midland City is located about 100 miles southeast of the state capital, Montgomery.

Throughout the ordeal, authorities had been speaking with Dykes though a plastic pipe that went into the shelter. They also sent food, medicine and other items into the bunker, which apparently had running water, heat and cable television but no toilet. It was about 4 feet underground, with about 50 square feet of floor space.

It was not immediately clear how authorities determined the man had a gun.

At the request of law enforcement authorities, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta had approved the provision of certain forms of equipment that could be employed to assist in the hostage situation, according to a U.S. official who requested anonymity in order to discuss a pending law enforcement matter. It is not clear whether the equipment was actually used.

Authorities said the kindergartner appeared unharmed. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Dothan. Officials have said he has Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Melissa Knighton, city clerk in Midland City, said a woman had been praying in the town center Monday afternoon. Not long after, the mayor called with news that Dykes was dead and that the boy was safe.

"She must have had a direct line to God because shortly after she left, they heard the news," Knighton said.

Neighbors described Dykes as a menacing, unpredictable man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe. Government records indicate he served in the Navy from 1964 to 1969, earning several awards, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He had some scrapes with the law in Florida, including a 1995 arrest for improper exhibition of a weapon. The misdemeanor was dismissed. He also was arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

He returned to Alabama about two years ago, moving onto the rural tract about 100 yards from his nearest neighbors.

Arnold recalled that, for a time, Dykes lived in his pickup truck in the parking lot of the apartment complex where Dykes' sister lived. He would stay warm by building a fire in a can on the floorboard and kept boxes of letters he wrote to the president and the unspecified head of the Mafia, Arnold said.

Dykes believed the government had control of many things, including a dog track he frequented in the Florida Panhandle. Arnold said that Dykes believed if a dog was getting too far ahead and wasn't supposed to win, the government would shock it.

Ronda Wilbur, a neighbor of Dykes who said the man beat her dog to death last year with a pipe, said she was relieved to be done with the stress of knowing Dykes was patrolling his yard and willing to shoot at anyone or anything that trespassed.

"The nightmare is over," she said. "It's been a long couple of years of having constant stress."

Quantum microscope for living biology

Feb. 4, 2013 ? A team of Australian scientists has developed a powerful microscope using the laws of quantum mechanics to probe the inner workings of living cells.

The team, a collaboration between The University of Queensland and the Australian National University, believe their microscope could lead to a better understanding of the basic components of life and eventually allow quantum mechanics to be probed at a macroscopic level.

Their world-first discovery has been published online in Nature Photonics.

Team leader Associate Professor Warwick Bowen, of UQ's ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems, said the study relied on quantum interactions between the photons of light to achieve measurement precision that surpassed conventional measurement.

"This 'quantum microscope' is a pioneering step towards applications of quantum physics in technology," Associate Professor Bowen said.

"In fundamental physics, it could be immediately applied towards observing phenomena in the microscopic motion of small particles that have yet to be observed and were predicted many decades ago."

In the study, the researchers used their quantum microscope to measure the cytoplasm of a live beer-brewing yeast cell and found they could achieve their measurements 64 per cent faster than with a conventional microscope.

Lead author and UQ PhD student Mr Michael Taylor said the results demonstrated for the first time that quantum light could provide a practical advantage in real-world measurements.

"The measurements performed could aid in understanding the life-cycle of a cell, as its cytoplasm plays a crucial role in transferring nutrients into and around the cell," he said.

Among other things, the 'quantum microscope' could reveal the finer details within a cell -- more than a regular microscope.

Biological imaging is a particularly important application for quantum light as these fine details are typically only visible when a lot of light is used.

"Unfortunately, biological samples are grilled when the power is increased too far," said Mr Taylor.

"The 'quantum microscope', on the other hand, provides a way to improve measurement sensitivity without increasing the risk of optical damage to the sample."
